Upwey South Primary School services the medical needs of our student community with a dedicated First-Aid Room. Services within the first aid room are managed by our trained First Aid Officer, and supported by additional Level Two (2) trained staff. At our school, it is an expectation that all staff hold current Level Two (2) First Aid Qualifications; enabling all staff to deliver required immediate medical care to students.
When a student attends first-aid, and receives treatment, an entry of treatment is recorded within Compass, which triggers an information alert to parents/carers. This alert is sent via email, and provides the parent/carer with an overview of the situation, and details of first-aid administered.
Occasionally, in addition to the above electronic notification, parents/carers may receive a phone call from the First Aid Officer. Phone calls are made under the following circumstances:
- all facial/head injuries - regardless of the level of impact or injury
- any incidents which require emergency services to attend the school
- any incidents in which the First Aid Officer forms a belief that the parent/carer should seek additional medical attention.
Diagnosed Medical Conditions
Parents/Carers of students with a diagnosed medical condition (for example, but not limited to, anaphylaxis, allergies, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, learning impairments, physical impairments) are required to provide an 'Action Plan' which has been completed by a registered medical practitioner. Action plans detail the instructions for school staff to follow in the event of a medical emergency. Action plans help us to provide a safe environment for your child when attending school.
For parents/carers seeking support, medical action plan templates are available via the links below, or in-person from the school office.
Administration of Medication
If a student has a medical condition that requires prescription medication to be administered during school hours, parents/carers must complete a Medication Authority form consenting for staff to administer medication during school hours.
All medication must be given to the school office, in its original packaging, and accompanied by a signed authority form.
No medication (apart from Ventolin) is to be kept in school bags or the classroom.
